Bottom Line

The Amerisleep AS5 (formerly called Amerisleep Independence) mattress is the brand's softest mattress. Pressure-relieving memory foam and super-plush Active Flex let you sink into sleep. It uses eco-friendly, heat-wicking materials to keep you sleeping cool and comfy. Try the AS5 for 100-nights risk-free, today!

Get Amerisleep AS5 (Independence) if...

  • You're a side sleeper. The Amerisleep AS5 is made with side sleepers in mind. The top two foam layers are very soft and work incredibly well at cradling your hips and shoulders.
  • You tend to sleep hot. Amerisleep's Bio-Pur® material layer features an open-cell design that allows more air to circulate than traditional foam beds.
  • You want a mattress with support. Amerisleep's construction provides targeted pressure relief to your back, hips, and shoulders, simultaneously resisting sagging.

Skip Amerisleep AS5 (Independence) if...

  • If you're a stomach sleeper. The AS5 is Amerisleep's softest mattress model. Stomach sleepers might find it unsupportive. If that's you, consider one of Amerisleep's firmer models.
  • You prefer to sleep "on top" of your mattress. The AS5 is designed to have ultra-plush comfort, allowing you to sink into the bed and feel "hugged." If you don't like to feel as if you're sleeping inside the mattress, the AS5 isn't the right fit for you.

Pros

  • Eco-friendly. They use plant-based and eco-friendly materials certified by CertiPUR-US®.
  • Amerisleep's most advanced mattress, featuring all their best technology.
  • Backed by a 20-year warranty.

Cons

  • A bit pricey, definitely an investment

Firmness/Feel/Comfort

Amerisleep AS5 is the softest mattress in the Amerisleep collection. It has a very plush feel, ranking 4/10 on the firmness scale. This mattress works best for side sleepers and those who prefer to sink into their mattress.

Construction Key Points

  • The AS5 has a height of 14".
  • Cover: Made of a blend of polyester, spandex, and celliant. This stretchy material is ultra-breathable and soft so you sleep comfortably throughout the night.
  • Top Layer: 3" of memory foam provides body contouring for pressure relief. It's also made with Amerisleep's Bio-Pur® open-cell design that keeps your cooler than traditional foam.
  • Second Layer: 2" of Active Flex layer adds extra softness without sacrificing support. It cradles your body and allows you to further sink into the mattress for plush comfort.
  • Third Layer: The Hive® transition layer features hundreds of foam hexagons grouped into 5 comfort zones. These expertly cushion and support your head, shoulders, back, hips, and feet to keep you properly aligned.
  • Base Layer: 7" of high-density poly foam has an extra firm feel that supports the mattress and your bodyweight.

Support & Motion Isolation

Because of the all-foam design, the AS5 does an excellent job at eliminating motion transfer. The thick layers absorb motion incredibly well; especially important if you sleep with a very active sleep partner.

As for edge support, it's decent but not great. Foam mattresses aren't known for having the best edge support, so it was to be expected. While it does compress if you sit or lie near the edge of the bed, you won't feel as if you're going to fall off.

Reasons to Buy Amerisleep AS5 (Independence)

  1. You get that plush memory foam feel without getting stuck. The 5" thick combined first two soft layers respond very quickly, making it easy to move around on the mattress.
  2. This mattress does a great job at isolating motion. If you sleep with a partner, you won't disturb their sleep with your movements and vice versa.
  3. This is an excellent choice if you want to sleep cool. The plant-based Bio-Pur® material's open design creates multiple air channels that continually allow air to flow in, and heat to flow out, so you don't sleep hot.

Reasons to Avoid Amerisleep AS5 (Independence)

  1. If you're a back or stomach sleeper, you're going to find this mattress too soft for your needs. Opt for one of Amerisleep's firmer models.
  2. If you're on a budget, looking to spend $500 or less, the Amerisleep AS5 is outside of this price range.
